REISFER aims at reducing CO2 emissions by 10 – 20% on selected ferries and routes in the Central Baltic region. REISFER in total of 17 ferries and routes in the pilot activities towards lower emissions. The pilot activities are divided into three categories:
- Electrification of ferries, including battery solutions and peak-shaving technology;
- Technological solutions such as more efficient propellers and hull coatings;
- Operational methods, including fuel monitoring systems and optimised routing.
The pilot activities will be supported by studies aiming to form a common understanding on the operating environment and organisation of the ferry transportation in the Central Baltic region, including green technologies in the ferry industry, perceptions of the public sector and ferry owners regarding moving towards zero-emission shipping, as well as readiness of the crews to use the new systems.
Based on the results of the activities carried out, REISFER partnership will present guidelines for the ferry industry to enable the implementation of new technologies and methods for decarbonisation in the most efficient way.
The project is a collaborative project with the partners Tallinn University of Technology, University of Turku, VTI (The Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute), Blidösundsbolaget, The Government of Åland, Estonian State Fleet, FinFerries, Kihnu Veeteed, Suomenlinnan Liikenne. The project is financed by the EU's INTERREG Central Baltic programme, which finances cross-border cooperation projects to solve common challenges together and across borders.
